As a Christian writer, you have a unique opportunity to write characters that not only entertain but also inspire and uplift readers. Character development is the cornerstone of any good story, and well-rounded characters help convey deeper messages. Whether you’re writing a faith-based novel or simply incorporating Christian values into your story, aim to create characters with depth and authenticity.

Here’s how to ensure your characters resonate with readers and reflect the heart of your faith.

1. Ground Your Characters in Faith

Start by rooting your characters in a spiritual foundation. Even if not every character in your story is a Christian, their journeys can be reflections of spiritual truths. Think about the role of faith in their lives. How does their belief (or lack thereof) influence their:

  • Decisions

  • Struggles

  • Growth

A character’s faith journey, whether steadfast or wavering, can mirror experiences that your readers have. If you approach character development this way, you can offer readers a relatable and inspirational figure.

Maybe your protagonist starts out the story with a strong belief in God, but they face challenges that test their faith. As they navigate trials, their character deepens, which showcases the complexities of faith in a fallen world. This adds layers to your characters and allows readers to see their own struggles reflected in your story.
